Old-fashioned Banner Making To Express the Activist in You:
A weekend of art, music, activism, and fun sponsored by Blue Rock Station and the Women’s Peacepower Foundation’s Accidental Activists Project (A Toolkit of Ways to Say “Hell No!”)

Join Ohio-based artist and activist Laurel Hobden at Blue Rock Station for a Saturday workshop that teach the art of old-fashioned banner or poster making. Registrants are welcome to arrive on Friday evening and department on Sunday morning, but the actual workshop is from 10 am to 6 pm Saturday.
Summer festivals and rallies bring opportunities to grow your message, or help you promote your cause. Think of those 1960’s protest signs or the Doo Dah Parade signs people carry in the parade. This isn’t about a Facebook banner, although the design might transfer to your fb page.
On Saturday you’ll learn how to take that message that you’re dying to share and turn it into a banner by designing and creating your own (or helping someone else create theirs). Plus there will be great food and an evening around the fire with live music.
All basic supplies will be provided, but banner makers can bring their own supplies as well. Supplies provided include paints, sheets, and brushes. Posters will be available for those who don’t want to make a banner.
What You’ll Learn:
- Simple beginning banner making from an expert
- An overview of the equipment, tools and supplies needed
- How to work with borders of the banner to create a balance to the message
- How to create a slogan that states the message you want to convey
- How to display the banner properly so that it lasts over time
- Tips to save time and effort
- How to network with other activists.

$35 covers tent space (one or two nights), three meals and banner workshop plus supplies
About Accommodations:
Meals: A Friday night snack, Saturday breakfast, lunch, and supper plus Sunday breakfast are provided.
Tent spaces are available without electricity.
Fees listed include tent space, banner workshop, evening music, and meals. Meals are hearty vegetarian and lactose or gluten issues are easily accommodated (provided notice is given one week prior to arrival).
Anything you bring, if not consumed will need to be taken home with you. BRS is a zero waste facility and works hard at composing, recycling, re-purposing, and re-using. If you’d like to know more about this part of farm life please don’t hesitate to ask.
This is a private farm. On special occasions the cabins and other buildings are available so that others can enjoy the beauty and serenity of living a simpler life. The accommodations are rustic. That means that although there is electricity available in various places on the property it is not available for tent camping. No outdoor cooking is permitted. The air conditioning is the evening breeze. The Privy with the Million Dollar View and the Half-assed Privy are commercial composting toilets.
The shower is located in a small structure with solar-heated water. If it is chilly, you’ll need to be the pioneer sort of person to use it. There will be plenty of hot water for washing off, dishes and anything else that’s required. Wifi can be spotty and the speed is very limited so plan that your phone will not be useable during your stay, and plan ahead by giving the Blue Rock Station phone number (740) 674-4300 for emergencies. Think of it as a vacation from the culture. It’s possible to find broadband down the hill at Green Acres Country Store.
No pets please (this is a working farm). No drugs or drinking…you can do that in other places. This is a place of peace so only kind voices. Also, please read the workshop rules and FAQ’s for events at Blue Rock Station.
What to bring:
A tent, pillow, toiletries, allergy medication, a hat, a walking stick (we have some if you don’t have one) and an idea for a slogan or inspiring words that could be painted onto a cloth banner.
You’re invited to bring personal items to share, or even something you’d like to leave behind by placing it in the fire, or in safe keeping for a return visit. Bring your own water bottle for refilling. Bring a drum or flute or guitar for sharing around the evening bond fire.

You will need to register by May 30th to make sure you have accommodations. Other options for accommodations (if you don’t want to sleep at BRS) can be found online and include Comfort Inn, Fairfield Inn, etc.
